- Description
- For an organization to be successful in the long term, it should be able to manage its resources and deliver products and services in the most effective and efficient manner. Although technical and other resources are invaluable in the delivery of products and services, in this chapter we focus on performance assessment and feedback in order to have effective management of human resources. There is an extensive body of literature that points to the significant and positive impact of human resources in building a firm’s sustained competitive advantage (Barney, 1991; Wright, Dunford, & Snell, 2001; Boxall & Purcell, 2016). Several studies have highlighted the fact that managing people requires attention to three key factors that significantly impact performance (Vroom, 1964; Blumberg & Pringle, 1982): ability, motivation, and opportunity – popularly known as the AMO framework (Appelbaum, Bailey, Berg, & Kalleberg, 2000). First, employees must have the ability (the relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies) to carry out their jobs productively. Second, employees must be motivated to apply their ability in a productive manner in a workplace context. Third, they should be able to do so in a work context that is supportive and provides them with the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge for productive activities. It is not surprising then to see an extensive interest by organizations in investing in performance and productive capacity of individuals.
