- This paper presents a conceptual framework that integrates several theories to provide an analysis of observed stakeholder interactions in an attempt to improve the understanding of how networking is required to achieve sustainable tourism development goals. The discussion outlines previous integrations between stakeholder theory and mathematically informed network theory as they have been introduced to tourism research. This paper proposes a reconceptualised approach for the integration of three theories: stakeholder theory, social network theory, and actor-network theory. Used together, these theories provide opportunities for a rethinking of the means for implementing sustainable tourism development. Tourismscapes, best considered as heterogeneous networks, is used to assist to conceptualise the dynamics of tourism in the context of a tourism destination. Drawing on network approaches for sustainable development, this paper contributes to new ways of conceptualising sustainable tourism development.
