- Description
- The dominant agricultural model is a result of the Green Revolution and, although it generates financial gains, it brings many socioenvironmental damages. Sustainable agriculture precisely consists on the dissatisfaction with this system and a movement that reestablishes the union between agricultural production, environmental protection and traditional knowledge prestige. Payment for environmental services, on the other hand, is an instrument that incentivizes those who conserve the soil, the water resources, biodiversity and culture, among others. In this context, the present chapter objectives to exam if payment for environmental services is capable of satisfying fomenting sustainable agriculture, emphasizing the right of the farmers. The verified hypothesis is that the referenced stimulus is viable, but only if it understands the existing conflicts and assures the participation of all the affected parties. This chapter will utilize the monographic methodology combined with the bibliographical research technique and inductive method. The preliminary result is that sustainable agriculture maintains nature in a harmonic way, as dictated by payment for environmental services, however, the current dominant system is problematic and insufficient.
