- The demand for fresh water supply has increased by prolonged periods of drought or seasons of low rainfall in a number of countries including Australia. Therefore, reuse of wastewater will address the stress on freshwater resources to some extent. Various sources of wastewater such as domestic sewage and industrial wastewaters including winery, abattoir, dairy farm wastewater etc. provide nutrients to crops as well water for irrigation. Another major benefit of wastewater reuse for irrigation is the decrease in wastewater discharges to natural waterways. Plant nutrients in wastewater sources such as nitrogen and phosphorus can stimulate harmful algal blooms in waterways but are a valuable source of nutrient for crops. Utilization of wastewater can be a cost-effective technique for producing high biomass plant species to reduce the risk of nutrients reaching the aquatic environment, ultimately using this biomass for energy generation. The overall objective of this research work was to examine the potential value of winery, abattoir, dairy farm and municipal wastewater resources for growing energy crops. The specific objectives of this work included (1) to study the effect of different wastewaters on germination of various crops in wastewater itself, wastewater + Soil and wastewater + Sand as growing media, (2) to evaluate the effect of winery, abattoir, dairy farm and municipal wastewater irrigation on the plant dry matter yield and soil fertility status under greenhouse and field conditions, (3) to examine the effect of wastewater irrigation on the bio-energy production and nutrient status of biomass digestates. The utilization of wastewater sources for irrigation of energy crops is a cost-effective technique to reduce the risk of nutrients reaching aquatic environments. Abattoir and dairy wastewater can be used as nutrient and water source to grow energy crops. The biomass from the tested energy crops can be used as a feed-stock for bio-energy production.
