- Description
- Many process industries including coal and gold mines deal with life-threatening methane-air mixtures. In human history, methane-air mixtures caused numerous explosions leading to property damage and loss of lives. The severity of fire and explosion is impacted by some variables such as fuel concentration and turbulence. This work aims to obtain an enhanced understanding of methane-air explosion phenomena in a straight duct. Orifice plate obstacles of various blockage ratios (30%, 50%, and 70%) were employed in the duct and the effect of those obstacles on flame propagation characteristics were investigated. The experimental glass tube has a volume of 23 L and obstacles were placed at various locations of the test tube. It was observed that the increase of blockage ratio increased the explosion pressure and flame speed. The number of obstacles also influenced the explosion parameters and it was found that the explosion pressure and flame speed increased with the number of obstacles. In particular, with the test of 10% methane in air, the maximum overpressure increased from 181 to 216 kPa and flame speed increased from 149 to 170 m/s when a single orifice plate was placed in the flame propagation path increasing the blockage ratio from 30% to 70%. The maximum overpressure and flame speed increased further when the number of orifice plates of 70% blockage ratio was increased from one to two. In this case, the values of maximum overpressure and flame speed were 240 kPa and 175 m/s respectively.
