- Mental ill health and substance misuse frequently occur concurrently and can negatively interact with one another. Mental ill health can range from mild, transient symptoms through to severe and persistent conditions including psychoses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder; and severe depression or anxiety disorders. Substance misuse can also vary in severity, persistence, and significance. Use exceeding national health guidelines may be defined as 'problematic' and may place the person at longer-term health risks but may not be currently associated with any obvious functional or psychological difficulties. At the other end of the spectrum, the level of substance use may be such that it is having more immediate and obvious impacts on physical and mental health, role and identity, as well as potential social, financial, and legal consequences (Turner and Baker, 2011). Case studies presented in this chapter run as a continuing theme throughout.
