- Increasing the lump ore proportion in the blast furnace (BF) burden is an effective way to decrease the overall cost of hot metal, environmental impact and energy consumption of ironmaking. The perception that the softening and melting (SM) properties of lump ore are not as good as sinter is limiting its utilisation in some blast furnaces in China. However, it is not appropriate to evaluate lump ore based only on its individual SM behaviour as studies have shown that the SM properties are significantly improved when lump ore and sinter interact. In this work, SM properties of individual lump ores, sinters and mixed burdens are investigated to examine the influence of this interaction. The SM properties of mixed burdens are usually better than both individual lump ore and sinter due to their favourable interaction, leading to a narrower and more permeable cohesive zone (CZ) in the BF. Adding more lump ore in the burden also allows the sinter basicity to be higher which has the additional benefits of decreasing the fuel rate and increasing productivity in the sinter plant and improving sinter strength and reducibility enabling better performance in the whole BF, not only the CZ. Furthermore, this study found that the performance of mixed porous Australian hematite-goethite lump ore like Newman Blend Lump and sinter appears to be better than mixed dense lump ore and sinter because of the higher interactivity of the former. Thus, more attention should be given to the properties of mixed burdens of lump ore and sinter rather than individual materials. Porosity is a key factor influencing the reducibility and interactivity of lump ore and it increases linearly with reduction degree below 900°C. In addition, synchrotron computer tomography (CT) scanning can be used to study the voidage structure of ferrous material during SM under load testing to interpret the fundamentals of pressure drop and bed contraction.
