- Ventilation air methane (VAM) is a dilute stream of methane expelled from underground coal mines in large ventilation shaft air flows (100-600 m³/s). Fugitive VAM emissions pose a significant carbon liability to underground coal mines. To overcome the shortcomings of current VAM abatement technologies, the VAM chemical looping oxidizer (VAMCO) was developed at The University of Newcastle, Australia. To demonstrate the concept at scale, a pilot-scale 1 m³/s VAMCO unit was constructed. In this study, ilmenite, a naturally occurring iron and titanium rich mineral sand was used as the bed material for VAM abatement in the 1 m³/s VAMCO unit. Two sets of experimental trials were completed. Firstly, commissioning of the VAMCO unit was completed with ilmenite at bed temperatures of 630-740°C, for which methane conversions of 93-100% were achieved. Secondly, extended run time experiments were performed to examine ilmenite deactivation. No change in ilmenite reactivity was observed over the 500 hours of operation, and 100% methane conversion was achieved in all extended run time experiments.
