- The explosion characteristics of methane-air mixtures were explored in a 20 litre vented vessel connected to a curved duct (one form of ducted vessel). With the aim of relating the experimental outcome with the real world explosion scenario, a wafer check valve was employed. The valve was used to keep the methane-air mixture initially confined and open at the time of explosion. The experiments were carried out in turbulent methane-air mixtures with strong igniters. The turbulent mixture of methane-air, strong ignition energies and curved flow pathways impacted on explosion parameters. The explosion pressure rise was found to be higher in the investigated system when compared to quiescent methane-air mixtures, weak ignition energies and straight duct.
