- Pool-riffle morphology plays an important role in creating a diverse aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, it is of interest to study the long term stability of pool-riffle sequences, and the processes that contribute to the observed self-maintenance mechanisms. Continuous simulations supported by field data are used to track the sand fraction evolution in pools and riffles during a one-year period in order to relate it to self-maintenance. Analysis of several hydrographs indicate that not only unsteadiness can affect the self-maintenance, but also the bed grain size distribution history. The results emphasize the role of sediment size distribution before a potential reversal episode occurs. The larger amount of sand fraction in the pools promotes conditions for self-maintenance as the material will be easier to move by the next flood.
