- We report the manufacture of liquid marble-like structures of silica and sphalerite particles around a water droplet driven by an electrostatic field. This involved bringing a droplet into the vicinity of a particle bed on an electrically-biased substrate, so that the particles jumped to the droplet. The difference in wetting behaviour of the silica and sphalerite particles was a critical factor, as it held out the prospect of forming 'complex liquid marbles' with a silica suspension core and sphalerite shell. The effect of various parameters on aggregate formation and internal structure was investigated. These parameters included the applied voltage on the particle bed substrate, the proportions of silica and sphalerite in the particle bed, and the ambient humidity. A technique was developed for preserving the resulting structures in resin and sectioning them to reveal their internal structure, and we report preliminary results obtained with this technique.
