- Ion scattering is a powerful technique involving the elastic scattering of ions off atoms of a solid to determine the structure and composition of the surface or near-surface region. This involves scattering of normally protons, inert gas ions or alkali ions with energies ranging from 1 keV to 1 GeV. The choice of the projectile and its energy are largely dictated by the information depth under investigation. More detailed information on the techniques can be obtained from reviews of Low Energy Ion Scattering [93N], [94T], [01B1], [07B] (typically 0.1–10 keV), Medium Energy Ion Scattering [01W], [01B2], [07W] (typically 50–200 keV), Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry [78C], 10W (typically 0.5–4 MeV) and High Energy Elastic Recoils [10W], [93B] (projectile energies from 5 MeV to 1 GeV). Over such a large energy range the processes involving scattering and energy loss change character considerably and the exact detail in each case is outside the remit of a brief description however the fundamental details will be discussed to clarify the impact these parameters have on analysis.
