- Description
- Unlike design critics, many novelists face the interesting challenge of trying to go beyond literal and material interpretations of the interior to convey other cultural, social and psychological meanings. In their descriptions, spaces are often evoked as metaphors of the mind or realms for representing psychic and spiritual life. Across various texts, rooms and moments of transition such as ascending a stair can be a social, psychological, moral or spiritual act. Although they focus primarily on persons, novelists, according to Karen Chase, develop characters and story lines into which the charged system of spatial relations provides the imaginative condition of the novel.
