- Description
- The paper presents a case study of the application of a methodology to access the rockfall hazard at the base of a highwall at a mine in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland. The methodology presented in this study combines multi-view 3D reconstruction of the highwall with 2D lumped mass and 3D discrete element rockfall modelling. The methodology allows the optimisation of the design of the portal entries and rockfall berms through a more comprehensive rockfall hazard assessment. Firstly, potential unstable blocks were identified during the site inspections and then their shapes and dimensions were estimated from the high-resolution 3D representation of the highwall. A long-tendon support regime was implemented. Next, rockfall simulations were carried out for two scenarios. The first scenario consisted in 2D and 3D analyses for estimating the hazard for blocks smaller than the mesh aperture size. The predicted energies were found to be in excess of those acceptable for standard PPE and the response was to install a simple drape of industrial woven mesh (shade cloth). The second scenario included a set of 3D analyses for predicting the trajectories and residual velocities of representative potentially unstable blocks falling in between the drapery system and the highwall. It was identified that the highly irregular geometry of the highwall could allow the free fall of large blocks if/when the rock face weathers and the installed face bolts corrode.
