- Description
- The Ambivalent Adolescents in Indonesia research project (AAI) investigated trends and commonalities in the lives of young Indonesians in the first decade of the new millennium, particularly in the domains of life expectations, social life, popular culture, leisure, sexuality, education, and entiy to work. This chapter addresses some but not all of those themes. The main foci below are life expectations, education, and particularly entry to work, in the context of transition to adulthood in the world's largest Muslim nation. The term "transition" here refers to the journey from education to adulthood: work or career, marriage, and parenthood (Furlong and Cartmel 2006, 9; see also White, this volume). The analysis presented here is based on AAI project survey data collected in 2007 from 3565 Indonesian youth in secondary schools and universities at nine locations between 2006 and 2008. Analyzing this data in the context provided by secondary sources, this chapter offers empirical evidence of some contemporary Indonesian youth transition trends. It identifies some key trends and ongoing inequalities in the lives of young Indonesians who are on the cusp of leaving education and entering the workforce.
