- In August 2009, India passed the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 (henceforth referred to as the Act). It was passed almost 20 years after the Supreme Court of India declared that the Indian state had evaded its constitutionally mandated responsibilities to realize the right to education for its citizens.
