- Historically, international social work has been a professionalizing project involving the organizational structures of the profession wherein its international bodies have played a key role in developing parallel structures in the five regions and many diverse countries – 90 in all – where social work has a presence (Gray & Rennie, 2007). It has been about giving social work a visual presence in international forums whether the issue is human rights, ageing, or child safety. But the ‘experts’ who get to sit round the table are, more often than not, the privileged – those with wealth and the wherewithal to travel to international meetings in exotic locations (Razack, in Gray, Webb, & Midgley, 2012; Webb, 2003). Their main concern has been about social work becoming a ‘truly global profession’ through developing a ‘truly global response to international needs’ (Cox & Pawar, 2006, pp. 356-357), that is, the internationalization of social work. For me, however, international social work is, at heart, an area of crosscultural exchange where people, wherever they are physically located, bring their knowledge to bear on solving local problems and local issues. Even though international social work bodies might be areas of exclusive engagement, they, nevertheless, involve privileged people from different countries and cultures who are, hopefully, in touch with local issues and problems at home.
