- This chapter focuses on the role of learning, curriculum and pedagogy in the school and the effects of regular curriculum on the diversity of students with additional needs in classrooms. Strategies that allow for multiple curriculum approaches and alternate approaches are examined, although the chapter acknowledges that teaching within the regular school is very much governed by the curriculum of the class, school or jurisdiction. Hence learning and teaching approaches in this chapter recognise that teachers may perceive that they have limited flexibility in providing learning activities that include students with additional needs. This chapter provides clear evidence that students with additional needs can be included in classroom learning activities, regardless of their additional need, although this takes belief, commitment, and effort on the part of the teacher. While the difficulties of adapting curriculum to meet the learning needs of all students appear greater in secondary schools, there is still the clear opportunity to do so, as will be seen in the examples and activities.
