- In the iron ore sintering process, the granulated mix is charged onto the strand to form a bed. The properties of the bed depend on the characteristics and material properties of the granulated mix and charging conditions. Numerical simulations based on Discrete Element Method (DEM) and experimental studies were carried out to investigate the influence of granule parameters and loading conditions on the angle of repose − an important parameter in characterising the properties of the granule bed. To improve the simulation accuracy, the static, dynamic and rolling friction coefficients of the iron ore granules as a function of granule size were measured in laboratory-scale experiments and used as input parameters in the DEM model. Experimental work was carried out with the aim of validating the model. The comparison between the experimental and simulated results showed that the angle of repose predicted by the model matched well with that measured in the experiment with an error less than 2.0 degrees. A series of simulation tests were conducted to study the influence of granule size, container width and drop height on the angle of repose. It was concluded that: (1) The angle of repose decreases by about 4.0 degrees when the granule size increases from 5.0 mm to 9.0 mm; (2) As w/d increases from 20 to 40, the angle of repose drops by about 3.5 degrees and then reaches a stable level; (3) As h/d increases from 20 to 40, the angle of repose gradually decreases by about 3.0 degrees.
