- Description
- The Gospel according to John is a very important writing for Christian tradition. It has a character all its own, and presents a picture of Jesus of Nazareth which is both similar to the other Gospels and yet very different from them. John's Gospel has had a mixed reception. Many people have enjoyed and valued it as a straightforward account of Jesus' life, death and purpose, while others have seen it as rich in complex spiritual understanding - what one writer calls its 'exalted mysticism'. Given this history, one of the things that a Guide like this should do is to take us back to the text itself, to try to understand what it says in its own right.
