- Magnetorheological fluids are suspensions of micron or nano-sized magnetisable particles in a liquid and under an applied magnetic field their viscosity and other physical properties can be altered by orders of magnitude, depending on the intensity of the field. Modern technological applications require specific surface functionality of the particles while keeping the property of responding to a magnetic field. This is achieved by using core-shell particles in which the core is magnetic and the shell possesses the suitable surface functional groups that allow for the tuning of interparticle interactions. The application of discrete element method (DEM), to core-shell particles is still scarce. In this study we use DEM to investigate the behaviour of magnetic core-shell particles whose cores have ferromagnetic properties and shells were simulated as silica. This is the first DEM study of core-shell particles where the shells and core components were explicitly considered in the simulations rather than just the averaging of the core and shell of the core-shell particles. Ferromagnetic core particles of different sizes (2.0 and 4.0 μm) were simulated with a large overall particle size range of core-shell particles (2.2-21 μm) in order to vary the thickness of the shell layer and study the effect of the shell layer on chain formation. Chain formation was studied in the absence of an electrical double layer force as typical of a medium with high salt concentration.
