- The oral methods discussed in this chapter all concern the development of spoken language skills for communication and learning and involve the production and reception of spoken language without the support of a visual-manual language or an artificially developed communication system. These methods have contributed to the rich, multicentury history pertaining to education of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.Unfortunately this history has often been marked by acrimonious debate. It is not the intention to review this debate in this chapter, although it is certainly woven throughout the topic. Interested readers should consider Winefield (1987) or Vernon and Andrews (1990) for their reflections and summaries. Thus, disregarding most of the broader method debate, in this chapter I shall focus on the development of the oral methods, the different approaches that fall under the broad umbrella of the oral method, and what recent research has contributed to our knowledge about the use and effectiveness of oral methods.
