- This paper deals with the discrimination of data obtained from historical sources for the corrosion of reinforcement of older structures. Two matters are of interest-the time to initiation of reinforcement corrosion and, separately, the time to the occurrence of active, on-going reinforcement corrosion. Estimates of these have been obtained for a large number of structures. Conventional understanding is that the two times are governed by the rate at which aggressive materials such as chloride ions diffuse through the protective but not impermeable concrete cover. However, other failure modes, such as premature cracking caused by alkali-aggregate reactions may be involved. Proper analysis requires separation of the data for different failure mechanisms. The present paper describes an approach that permits application of extreme value theory to the collective data. The analysis shows distinct populations in each data set and permits the data to be assigned to each failure cause.
