- Description
- Newcastle has had a long history of socialist and communist politics and activism but there has been little published research on this topic. Published histories of Newcastle have had little to say about its socialist and communist past, and literature on socialism and communism in Australia has tended to neglect its connection with Newcastle. The socialist experience in Newcastle has also not fared well in writing on capitalism and class in Australia, social activism, social movements and research on Australian trade unions, although there are some important exceptions. To find out more about this neglected aspect of Newcastle's radical past and to reclaim for working-class people some of the forgotten history of their resistance to injustice and their struggle for a better society, we carried out a study. It is based primarily on the first-hand accounts of half a dozen socialist activists' experiences and activities in this period. As the Czech writer Milan Kundera put it, the struggle against 'power is the struggle of memory against forgetting'. We also believed that providing information about earlier working-class struggles might in some way be helpful for contemporary social activists in their own campaigns.
