- Description
- The east end of Newcastle is a special place where Victorian and art deco buildings nestle between the Pacific Ocean, the Hunter River foreshore and the Hill, overlooked by Christ Church Cathedral. The tree-lined pedestrian mall and Newcastle Railway Station are within short walks of the dramatic coastline and the magnificent beaches where some of the best surfers in the world do their magic. The fight for the heart, soul and future of the city of Newcastle emerged over competing visions of this part of the city, and is embodied in two campaigns, Keep Newcastle's Heart Low-rise and Save Our Rail. Both campaigns have seen thousands of residents stand up against insider dealings between state and local politicians and a few developers who believed they could control Newcastle as their personal fiefdom.
