- Description
- In this paper, we propose a simple method to evaluate the achievable rate of a realistic cognitive radio (CR) link that takes into account the imperfectness of spectrum sensing. We consider CR links under both static and fading environments. In the considered CR system, the CR user senses and dynamically exploits the spectrum pool via dynamic frequency hopping. Under imperfect spectrum sensing, false-alarm and miss-detection occurs. The miss-detection event will cause impulsive-like interference emerged from collisions due to the simultaneous spectrum access of both primary and cognitive users to the CR link. That makes it very challenging to evaluate the achievable rate. By first examining the static CR link where the channel strength changes slowly over time, we show that the achievable rate of the considered CR link using a Gaussian input can be calculated through a simple series representation. This representation provides an effective and accurate way to calculate the achievable rate. In the second part of the paper, we extend the calculation of the achievable rate to a more realistic wireless fading environment. In order to take into account the effect of fading in the calculation, we introduce a piece-wise linear curve fitting (PLCF)-based method to approximate the instantaneous achievable rate curve as a combination of linear segments. It is then demonstrated that the average achievable rate can be calculated effectively to achieve any given accuracy level.
