- Bonhoeffer's eco-ethic, emanating largely from his understanding of God who would be 'Lord of the World' in Christ, provides a framework for approaching the challenge of climate change. Whilst what can be gleaned of Bonhoeffer's eco-theology remains firmly grounded in his Christology, this paper explores the relationship between Gandhi's, and hence, Indian natural theologies, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, Bonhoeffer's own evolving natural theology concerning humanity's relationship with the rest of creation. The case rests partly on clear coincident thinking between the two men but also sufficient evidence in Bonhoeffer's writings to raise the question of this coincident thinking being more a case of Gandhi's direct influence on him. It is argued that Bonhoeffer's eco-theology, to be seen principally within the framework of his over-arching Christology but with unusually plain influence from Indian natural theologies, can serve to provide a suitable foundation for a contemporary eco-theology and allied eco-ethic that can assist the global community's search for solutions around the pressing issues associated with climate change.
