- Description
- This article closely examines the first indications of the political ambivalence of Christianity in the though of Friedrich Engels. He is well known for his later articulation of this ambivalence in his studies of Thomas Müntzer and early Christianity. Yet the initial insights into this ambivalence actually occur when Engels was still a believer of the Reformed (Calvinist) conviction. In particular, they take place in his extensive engagements with the Reverend F. W. Krummacher, the formidable minister of the church in which he grew up in Elberfeld (Wuppertal).
