- Low back pain (LBP) is a common and costly condition and represents a large proportion of the patient population accessing physiotherapy services. This project used data-mining methodology to investigate the diagnostic and treatment codes used by physiotherapists in the management of low back pain patients and evaluated the reliability and the perceived utility of a relatively new classification system. Further, the clinical Outcomes of a cohort of low back pain patients were prospectively evaluated. Thirteen different low back pain diagnostic codes were used by physiotherapists, with the large majority coded simply as 'low back pain'. Clinician agreement with the new classification system was almost perfect (K = 0.84) and largely perceived to be useful. Low back pain patients achieved a clinically important mean change in disability score, with patients classified as 'acute' and 'disc' achieving a greater magnitude of improvement compared to patients classified as 'chronic' and 'non-disc' respectively.
