- Description
- This chapter describes how clinical data mining (CDM) was used as a research method for investigating the vocal features of patients who have thyroid disease. More specifically, it was used to empirically validate the presence of distinctive vocal features in patients with thyroid disease. Subjects were adult patients who had attended pre-operative voice assessment in the Speech Pathology Department at John Hunter Hospital (JHH) as part of the Hunter Elective Admission Planned Pre-operative Service. Available patient data collected between 2003 and 2007 were extracted and organised by practitioners so that statistical data analysis could be performed. Both the process and findings of this CDM study are presented as well as the potential for future exploration of the data. It was found overall that 80% of patients with thyroid disease presented pre-operatively with voice difficulties or related upper airway symptoms that are associated with voice problems in patients with thyroid disease.
