- Description
- B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and the related NTproBNP are released from the ventricle of patients with heart failure. High concentrations help to distinguish heart failure (HF) from other causes of dyspnoea. The test detects heart failure with either diastolic or systolic ventricular dysfunction but is also elevated in left ventricular hypertrophy. Trials in general practice show it to be of most use in excluding heart failure in patients with concurrent respiratory disease.
