- The CD “Hemispheres” Mystical Journeys through Four Continents, Sally Walker Flute, Philip Mayers Piano was released under the “Chartreuse” label in February 2013, with CD critical notes by Sally Walker. It has been broadcast nationally on ABC Classic FM and received a positive review in the Dutch Flute Society journal (translation is included).Cd released under the “Chartreuse” label and produced by Sally Walker and Thomas Wieber (BeoRecords). This Cd has been broadcast on ABC Classic FM a number of times. It was recorded in the historic Mendelssohn Summer House (Leipzig, Germany) and produced by Sally Walker and Thomas Wieber (BeoRecords). “Hemispheres” is an audio exploration of the modern interpretation of the symbolic archetypes of the flute that have evolved since ancient times. With its existence dating from ancient times (first written evidence of a transverse flute was in the ninth century B.C. classic of Chinese poetry, the Shih Ching), the evidence for the development of the flute has been largely derived from artwork and mythology. Other early evidence of flutes existed in tombs in Ancient Egypt, in Sanskrit depictions in temple reliefs in India and on ancient coins from the Indus civilization. Even from these earliest artworks and artifacts, indications of the extra-musical associations of the flute are apparent. Religious icons such as Lord Krishna (India), Osiris (Egypt) and Athene (Greece) have all been depicted playing it as well as the Greek God Eros. Similarly, the flute’s Japanese relative, the Shakuhachi, is integrally linked to Zen Buddhism. This recording features twentieth century works from Australia (Paul Stanhope*#, Anne Boyd, Richard Meale*), Argentina (Coco Nelegatti*#), the Czech Republic Jindrich Feld), India (Vanraj Bhatia), Latvia (Pēteris Vasks), Slovakia (Márian Búdos)*#, the UK (David Matthews)#, the USA (Ernst Bloch) and Switzerland (Frank Martin). They are linked by their extra-musical thematic associations related to the varying role the flute has held throughout history. Interestingly, the inter-relatedness spans four continents, suggesting a commonality of this idea.
