- Description
- Cartography is the research and practice of making maps. It links science, aesthetics, and technique. Its premise is that reality can be effectively modeled in ways that communicate spatial information. The collaborative arts project Tasmania 1:100,000 Mapping the Island utilized cartography, a topographical map of Tasmania, as a foundational visual structure. This arts project consisted of one hundred and forty works produced by invited national and international visual artists and arts practitioners. The collage Only Time will Tell by Brett Alexander formed a component of the collaborative arts project Tasmania 1:100,000 Mapping the Island. It extended traditional visual spatial renderings of cartography through its use of non-traditional media and idiosyncratic visual symbolism in its rendering of a Tasmania sensibility. The innovation of this research is how a dissected piece of traditional cartography, a topographic map of Tasmania, can effectively express a sense of place. The significance of this research is its reinterpretation of the function of cartography. It moves cartography beyond communicating spatial information to one that communicates multiple personal renderings of Tasmania. Its value is attested to by the following indicators: Its inclusion in a curated exhibition, Tasmania 1:100,000 Mapping the Island, by two esteemed Tasmanian artists Penny Carey-Wells and Diane Perndt. This exhibition formed part of the Ten Days on the Island Festival 2009 – the leading biannual arts event in Tasmania, Australia. Additionally it formed part of the International Association of Hand Paper Makers & Paper Artists (IAPMA) Congress 2009 in Burnie, Tasmania.
