- Much conceptually driven intermedial practice is concerned with how as opposed to what meaning is generated. The use of concealed and partially concealed quotations in intermedial artistic and musical production can function to test the limits of recognition and specificity. The partial concealment of musical and visual quoted forms promote listening/looking elsewhere to establish context and meaning, and in doing so, defers recognition of the play of quoted forms potentially underpinning the aesthetic experience. Artistic concealment and erasure can highlight the way in which interpretation is often dependent upon an invisible backstory. All the works within this portfolio are produced using digitally manipulated appropriated elements. With only the faintest trace of otherwise recognisable materials remaining, the unbeknownst viewer/listener may experience a sensation of partial recognition or uncertain familiarity. Typically, a supplemental paratextual support is required to point to the presence of some quoted elements.‘Subliminal appropriation’ is my term for describing the way in which (often digital) processes of manipulation are used to disguise paternities whilst maintaining something of their qualities. Within the context of art and music production, I employ this strategy to demonstrate that an unbeknownst viewer/listener can become engaged in the ‘new’ work without necessarily realising why it feels familiar. Similarly, my ‘expanded cover versions’ are designed to test the limits of translation across time and media. I am particularly interested in investigating what remains when an iconic work is restaged in a new context or medium.
