- Increasingly popular in the knowledge sharing literature is the linking of an employee‟s performance appraisal with their commitment to knowledge sharing. Typically, this practice is driven top-down, involves the formulation of a Key Performance Objective (KPO) directly linked to knowledge sharing, and is measured quantitatively. Other research has extended the investigation in an attempt to provide positive links between a range of HR practices including, training and development, retention and turnover and recruitment and selection decisions. This paper suggests that while the link between performance management systems and the use of knowledge sharing technologies can prove positive, the outcome may produce negative results. An alternative to the use of KPOs to encourage knowledge sharing through technology are practices linked to job security. It is suggested here that such incentives when driven from bottom up and measured qualitatively are far more likely to produce longer term positive associations for knowledge sharing. This paper adds to the existing literature by empirically examining two HRM practices and their associated effects on knowledge facilitators and knowledge barriers.
