- Description
- Psychology is taught as a high school subject in a number of States and Territories in Australia. Fifty-three high school teachers of psychology responded to a brief survey concerning their views of the discipline and their role in its teaching. Few of the teachers possessed formal qualifications is psychology, but in general teachers had a positive view of psychology. The high school teachers had a strong interest in greater levels of interaction with other psychology educators in a variety of contexts, for example through attendance at conferences related to the teaching of psychology. The learning outcomes considered to be of importance in the teaching of psychology centered on self-understanding and scientific knowledge. Very few of the participants stressed the nature of psychological practice from an evidence-based or scientist-practitioner perspective. The main source of support described was other teachers, and to a lesser degree attendance at teaching conferences. University educators in psychology do not currently play an important role in the provision of information and support to high school teachers of psychology, but this input is likely to be well received, and has the potential to act as a valuable conduit for the portrayal of scientific psychology to the community. The need for greater levels of interaction between university and high school teachers of psychology, and the development of resources that can assist high school teachers to develop sound, scientific, syllabi in their teaching of psychology, is apparent.
