- Description
- Does my patient have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and does it matter? Many patients with COPD remain undiagnosed, unknown even to doctors they consult regularly, until they have advanced stages of the disease. Patients may ignore limitations and symptoms of COPD or attribute them to other causes, such as increasing age, lack of fitness and weight gain. A delayed diagnosis may deny potentially effective treatment and result in lost opportunity to prevent progression. Only smoking cessation and prevention of exacerbations have been shown to reduce progression of COPD.
