- The devastating emotional impact of homicide on the families, friends and close associates of the primary victims is not well understood, and secondary victims receive little specialist support from mental health practitioners. This article reviews the present state of theory and research concerning homicide and health, seeks to explain the meaning of the term ‘devastation’ when applied to secondary victims’ emotional experiences, and describes a link between bereavement and post-traumatic stress disorder. The authors argue that further work is needed to provide appropriate support and that mental health nurses have an important role to play, particularly in assessing the health consequences for secondary victims of homicide.
