- Description
- The sociology of education explores a number of issues, such as social class, the sociogeographic location of schooling, gender and curriculum, young people's pathways through and after leaving school, vocational versus traditional academic programs of study, kids who are 'at risk', and the perspectives and experiences of a range of people directly involved in education: teachers, students, school managers, parents, the community, and education departments and policy-makers. The activities, experiences and attitudes of all these different players matter when we approach the topic of the sociology of education. This chapter begins by considering what a sociology of education encompasses and the kinds of issues it addresses. It then discusses some key concepts and debates within sociology of education, making links to both classic texts and contemporary issues.
