- Description
- Measurements of coronary blood flow and arterial blood pressure were continuously monitored via radiotelemetry from four unrestrained adult baboons for periods of 48 hr. The baboons had fully recovered from instrumentation with Doppler ultrasonic flow probes on the left circumflex coronary artery and miniature pressure gauges in the thoracic aorta. Measurements of phasic left circumflex coronary blood flow and aortic blood pressure were recorded during normal activities such as eating, sleeping, ambulation, and excitement. At night, when the animals were apparently asleep, coronary blood flow was minimal and coronary resistance was maximal. Maximal coronary blood flow and minimal coronary resistance occurred during stress and excitement. Increases in coronary flow and decreases in coronary resistance could generally be correlated with increases in blood pressure, heart rate, or activities known to increase myocardial oxygen requirements, but periodic vasodilations unassociated with changes in heart rate or arterial pressure occurred at night when the animals were motionless, and apparently asleep. Electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus nerves in one baboon resulted in a decrease in coronary resistance associated with decreases in arterial pressure and heart rate. This, in addition to the periodic vasodilations occurring at night, implies that the coronary circulation of primates is regulated by neural as well as metabolic factors.
