- Description
- The concept of "coronary spasm" is not new. Sir William Osler in the 1910 Lumelian Lectures stated that spasm results in cardiac dysfunction and was a cause of angina pectoris. In 1959 Prinzmetal described variant angina and coronary spasm was postulated as a pathophysiological entity. Coronary resistance to blood flow, or its reciprocal, conductance, is the net effect at any one time of the mechanical effects of cardiac contraction, of reflex and metabolic activity, and of strong myogenic control.
