- This research hypothesises that Minimalism and beauty extend a viewer experience of persuasive similarity. This experience is underpinned by parallel aesthetic constructs that promote heightened consciousness and reflexive awareness in the viewer. Previously, the aesthetics of objects held to be beautiful favoured no specific stylistic proposal and as such, the experiential models of Minimalism and beauty have resisted relative consideration. Through the writings of contemporary philosophers the formalist principles of Minimalism were found to have emerged as an effective conduit for the conveyance of beauty’s fullest promise. Testing this hypothesis evolved as a three-part process: Step A. The examination of formative Minimalist essays was undertaken to identify the requisite aesthetic principles that impel experience. These findings were then examined in relation to the aesthetic and experiential assertions of beauty. The outcomes of comparative analysis support the hypothesis of this research; Step B. Contemporary artworks deploying a Minimalist aesthetic were re-evaluated using the analytics of beauty. The artworks of contemporary international Minimalists Dani Marti and Gail Hastings were selected for examination. Throughout a series of interviews participants discussed the aesthetic presentation of their works and associated modes of experiential operation. The aesthetic and experiential propositions of beauty were also discussed in relation to their work. The subsequent analysis of data collected demonstrated a convincing correspondence and thereby supported the hypothesis; Step C. A body of studio-based artworks were constructed that manifest the theoretical propositions of both Minimalism and beauty. The aesthetic, technical, spatial and experiential aspects of these works were examined in relation to the research hypothesis.
