- Workplace coaching is traditionally examined in literature as a mechanism for improving employee performance and most of these investigations have been conducted from a psychological rather than a management perspective. Of those papers in the literature that do investigate coaching from a management perspective, they do so at an operational rather than a strategic level. To this end, this paper examines coaching as a strategic human resource management tool and its potential for assisting organisations to manage their labour market. It utilises a case study design and draws on data from interviews and documentation collected from ABC Manufacturing. The preliminary findings suggest that coaching can play a role in assisting organisations to manage their labour market risk by increasing the availability of promotable talent within its own employee ranks and decreasing intention to turnover.
