- Large-scale major events, such as music and cultural festivals and international sporting events, are an important motivator of tourism activity and have become an increasingly significant component of destination marketing. Despite the growing consumption trend of group-oriented travel behaviour and the economic significance of large-scale event-based tourism, a theoretical gap exists as to understanding what drives consumers to attend these events, particularly in groups. To address this gap, survey results from 170 Australian respondents planning to attend a major social event provide collective support for the influence of travel motivations, cognitive and affective destination image (of the event destination) on attitudes toward group-oriented, major-event travel and resulting travel intentions. Managerial implications and recommendations for future research are also presented.
