- The control of dust in many material handling applications is an important environmental and safety concern. For this reason, it is useful to be able to predict fugitive dust emissions for a system based on the operating parameters. These operating parameters generally consist of material properties (particle density, particle diameter, particle shape etc) and geometric properties (material fall height, impact angles etc). For the simple case of material falling in a vertical fashion there are a number of equations that exist to quantify the entrained air, which is directly related to dust prediction. One specific parameter that appears in these equations, but is not clearly defined, is the falling stream diameter. This paper presents results of experiments using a high speed camera and image analysis tools to quantify the stream diameter of a falling stream of material. The stream diameter is investigated for a range of different drop heights and a range of different materials.
