- Aims: The primary aim of the study was to describe the views of physiotherapists concerning the relative importance of generic attributes in entry level physiotherapy education. The secondary aim was to determine if the views of new graduates and more experienced physiotherapists differed in relation to the importance of generic attributes. Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire was mailed to all registered physiotherapists in Australia (n=12 893). Results: 3538 questionnaires were returned complete. Over 90% of physiotherapists perceived that the following graduate attributes were important in entry level education: ethical action and social responsibility, ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, effective communication, life-long learning, problem solving skills, logical, critical and creative thinking and effective time management. Conversely, a large number of responders (40-58%) perceived that research skills, leadership capacity and demonstration of international perspectives were not as important. A significantly greater proportion of new graduate physiotherapists perceived that research skills, leadership capacity, time management and international perspectives were important compared to experienced physiotherapists (p<0.05). Conclusion: This is the first national study to explore physiotherapists' views on the importance of generic attributes in entry level education. The findings should be considered in curriculum design and content.
