- Description
- Human pregnancy employs a coordinated system of methods that support, provision, and protect a growing fetus over 9 months of gestation and facilitate delivery The brain of the human fetus is still relatively immature at the time of delivery and the neonate therefore altricial and very dependent on the mother for care and feeding. This setting requires powerful bonding mechanisms between mother and offspring for a successful outcome. Studies of different species provide useful insights into the principles underlying mammalian gestation and parturition from the establishment of a uterine environment in which nutritional, hormonal, immunologic, and genetic influences interact to foster appropriate fetal development to the subsequent coordination of growth and maturity, with the complex mechanics of release into the external world.
