Reproductive development of singleton male progeny (n = 40) was assessed until slaughter at 598 days of age, when adult testicular cytology was evaluated. Low peri-conception diet delayed reproductive development: sperm quality was lowered during pubertal development with a concomitant delay in reaching puberty. These effects were subsequent to lower FSH concentrations at 330 and 438 days of age. In the fetus, the low peri-conception diet increased the proportion of seminiferous tubules and decreased blood vessel area in the testis, whereas low first trimester diet increased blood vessel number in the adult testis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to support the STXM data. We find that unannealed P3HT:PCBM nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit a common core–shell morphology, with a PCBM-rich core and P3HT-rich shell. The morphology of the thermally annealed NP films is highly dependent upon the molecular weight of the P3HT and is determined by PCBM diffusion through the P3HT matrix. Two PCBM diffusion mechanisms operate within this system: (1) at high molecular weights diffusion of molecular PCBM dominates whilst, (2) at low molecular weights diffusion of the PCBM cores is significant. The Stokes–Einstein continuum model for diffusion has been used to determine a threshold molecular weight at which the diffusion of PCBM cores is activated in these films. The calculated value (Mw~38–25 kg mol⁻¹) is shown to agree very well with experimental observations. Finally, a model for the morphological evolution of annealed P3HT:PCBM NP films is developed. Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:03:45 AEDT Determining the structural motif of P3HT:PCBM nanoparticulate organic photovoltaic devices https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:19663 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:01:11 AEDT Preparation of lanthanum hexaboride cathodes for thermionic energy generation https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:18716 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:01:05 AEDT The first goblin spiders of the genus Camptoscaphiella (Araneae: Oonopidae) from New Caledonia https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:18961 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:58:54 AEDT Lagrangian observations of circulation on an embayed beach with headland rip currents https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:19139 s=1m) oblique wave forcing. In-situ wave and current data, and bathymetric data were also collected. Beach morphology was dominated by a large mid-beach rip channel with lesser headland rip channels. Mean flow rates were 0.6ms⁻¹ in the mid-beach channel and 0.4ms⁻¹ in the headland channels, with the majority of cross-shore water volume flux (~60%) through the central channel. A weak alongshore current O (0.1ms⁻¹) was forced by the oblique offshore wave angle. Rip current velocities, flow variability, and rate of surfzone exits by Lagrangian drifters increased as water level decreased. Transient currents on a planar bar along the northern half of the beach, with mean speeds velocity standard deviation up to 0.2ms⁻¹, were not tidally modulated. Lagrangian time series were used to differentiate four current regimes (rip cell, rip head, planar bar and offshore low energy zone) based on mean velocity, velocity variability and degree of tidal modulation. An increase in surfzone exit rates by drifters was observed from south (upwave) to north (downwave), with exit rates per drifter deployment of 22% at the south headland rip, 65% at the mid-beach open rip, and 80% at the north headland rip. The high rate of drifter exits contrasts previous observations on open coast beaches. Observed flow behaviours are attributed to wave shadowing at the upwave (protected) end of the beach, and longshore currents forced by oblique waves deflected offshore at the downwave headland. These field observations are in good agreement with recent numerical modelling. A relationship between bathymetric variability and current intensity was determined, with cross-shore average mean velocity correlating with a parameterisation of bathymetric alongshore non-uniformity. This study demonstrates that flow behaviour and exchange rates can vary along the length of an embayed beach due to geological control. This research has implications for transport of organisms, nutrients and pollutants, is relevant to beach safety practitioners, and can be used in calibration of numerical models. Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:55:55 AEDT Surfactant-free nanoparticulate organic photovoltaics https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:21317 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:52:52 AEDT The role of miscibility in polymer:fullerene nanoparticulate organic photovoltaic devices https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:19348 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:52:11 AEDT Synthesis and photovoltaic performance of donor-acceptor polymers containing benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]dithiophene with thienyl substituents https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:19396 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:52:04 AEDT The effect of mesomorphology upon the performance of nanoparticulate organic photovoltaic devices https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:27964 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:38:45 AEDT Microglial activation in the injured and healthy brain: what are we really talking about? The optical, electrical, morphological, surface, structural characteristics of the fabricated BHJ PSCs were systematically examined. The atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectra measurements confirmed the structural reorganization, phase separation of polymer and fullerene domains resulting in the formation of well-ordered blend in the additive based devices. BHJ PSCs fabricated with P3HT:PC61BM:2-DHP and P3HT:PC61BM:2,4-DHP yielded a best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.35% and 3.58%, respectively, which in contrast outperformed than the PCE obtained from P3HT:PC61BM device (3.01%). The remarkably improved performance for P3HT:PC61BM:2-DHP can be attributed to the enhanced short-circuit current density induced by the morphology optimization. Additionally, the devices fabricated with the solid additives (2-DHP and 2,4-DHP) exhibited improved air-stability due to the oxygen insensitivity of the functional groups present in the chosen additives. The pyridine and hydroxyl groups in 2-DHP and 2,4-DHP possibly form the intermolecular interactions with the photoactive components (P3HT/PC61BM), contribute to the morphology optimization and subsequent PV performance enhancement in BHJ PSCs.
