Poor mental health (Mental Health Inventory-5 ≤ 54) was assessed annually. Baseline (2013) PA was classified as high/moderate/low, and insomnia symptoms (i.e., trouble sleeping) were classified as no insomnia symptoms/insomnia symptoms, with 6 mutually exclusive PA-insomnia symptom groups derived. Associations of PA–insomnia symptom groups with onset of poor mental health were examined using discrete-time proportional-hazards logit-hazard models. Results: There were 2322 new cases of poor mental health (21.2%). Relative to the high PA/no insomnia symptoms group, there were higher odds (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval (95%CI)) of poor mental health among the high PA/insomnia symptoms (OR = 1.87, 95%CI: 1.57–2.23), moderate PA/insomnia symptoms (OR = 1.93, 95%CI: 1.61–2.31), low PA/insomnia symptoms (OR = 2.33, 95%CI: 1.96–2.78), and low PA/no insomnia symptoms (OR = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.01–1.29) groups. Any level of PA combined with insomnia symptoms was associated with increased odds of poor mental health, with the odds increasing as PA decreased. Methods: Depression was estimated using a behavior-based diagnostic algorithm, inflammation using venous dried blood spot (DBS) CRP, central adiposity using waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and uncontrolled diabetes using venous DBS-glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Results: The association between depression and uncontrolled diabetes was partially mediated by CRP before but not after WHtR was considered. When WHtR was added to the model, it partially mediated the relationship between diabetes and depression while fully mediating the relationship between depression and CRP. Conclusions: These findings suggest that central adiposity may be a more significant mediator between diabetes and depression than inflammation and account for the relationship between these disorders and inflammation. Depression may cause an increase in central adiposity, which then may lead to diabetes, but the increase in known systemic inflammatory pathways caused by central adiposity may not be the key pathological mechanism.]]> Thu 14 Jul 2022 12:29:11 AEST ]]> Supports and Interventions for Carers of a Person with Depressive or Anxiety Symptomology: A Systematic Review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:53749 Thu 11 Jan 2024 12:14:35 AEDT ]]> Impact of perinatal depression and anxiety on birth outcomes: a retrospective data analysis https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:39920 Thu 11 Aug 2022 14:36:04 AEST ]]> Physical activity and prevention of mental health complications: An umbrella review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:55127 Thu 11 Apr 2024 11:14:46 AEST ]]> Long-term dietary acid load is associated with depression in multiple sclerosis, but less evidence was found with fatigue and anxiety https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:50194 Thu 06 Jul 2023 15:51:19 AEST ]]> A randomised trial of dialectical behaviour therapy and the conversational model for the treatment of borderline personality disorder with recent suicidal and/or non-suicidal self-injury: an effectiveness study in an Australian public mental health service https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:38356 Mon 30 Aug 2021 16:11:44 AEST ]]> The long arm of childhood: The prolonged influence of adverse childhood experiences on depression during middle and old age in China https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:44797 Mon 24 Oct 2022 09:25:04 AEDT ]]> Dietary intake, food addiction and nutrition knowledge in young people with mental illness https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:39178 Mon 23 May 2022 16:23:30 AEST ]]> Diet quality and depressive symptoms. At the 3-month assessment, participants with PTSD reported significant reductions in PTSD symptoms (except intrusion) and a lower rate of PTSD, and responded better to integrated depression-alcohol misuse CBT than to the alcohol/depression single-focussed or brief interventions. Conclusion: Integrated depression and alcohol misuse CBT may be effective for PTSD symptoms, but intrusions may need to be addressed specifically.]]> Fri 25 Nov 2022 15:45:27 AEDT ]]> Exploring academics beliefs about the meaning of life to inform mental health clinical practice https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:46590 Fri 25 Nov 2022 15:00:37 AEDT ]]> Symptoms of traumatic encephalopathy syndrome are common in the US general population https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:39813 Fri 24 Jun 2022 09:35:06 AEST ]]> Depression, anxiety, and psychosocial stressors across BMI classes: A Norwegian population study - The HUNT Study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:51925 Fri 22 Sep 2023 11:00:16 AEST ]]> Equivalency of the diagnostic accuracy of the PHQ-8 and PHQ-9: a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:38673 N = 27). At cutoff 10, the PHQ-8 was less sensitive by 0.02 (−0.06 to 0.00) and more specific by 0.01 (0.00 to 0.01) among those studies (N = 27), with similar results for studies that used other types of interviews (N = 27). For all 54 primary studies combined, across all cutoffs, the PHQ-8 was less sensitive than the PHQ-9 by 0.00 to 0.05 (0.03 at cutoff 10), and specificity was within 0.01 for all cutoffs (0.00 to 0.01). Conclusions: PHQ-8 and PHQ-9 total scores were similar. Sensitivity may be minimally reduced with the PHQ-8, but specificity is similar.]]> Fri 22 Apr 2022 15:27:36 AEST ]]> Development of the Ketamine Side Effect Tool (KSET) https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:39167 Fri 20 May 2022 16:17:36 AEST ]]> Salt-taste polymorphism TRPV1-rs8065080 is associated with increased likelihood of depression in an elderly cohort https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:53849 Fri 19 Jan 2024 10:25:16 AEDT ]]> Feasibility and Acceptability of a Novel Online Program for Mental Health Carers https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:53135 Fri 17 Nov 2023 11:57:26 AEDT ]]> Randomized controlled trial of online interventions for co-occurring depression and hazardous alcohol consumption: Primary outcome results https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:48460 .05) in the number of MoodGYM modules completed between the two groups. Discussion and conclusion: The current trial found no benefit to providing a brief online intervention for hazardous alcohol consumption alongside one for depression among people experiencing these co-occurring disorders. Further, the finding that adding an online intervention for drinking to one for depression led to a small reduction in the number of times the interventions were accessed implies the need for caution when deciding how best to provide online help to those with co-occurring depression and hazardous alcohol consumption.
