This invited tutorial paper presents an introduction to key concepts in the field of epidemiology. Definitions of prevalence and incidence are reviewed, along with discussion of the most suitable research methodologies for investigation. Epidemiological approaches to establishing causation and the determination of risk are outlined, in order to provide the reader with a framework for the critical analysis of the research literature on speech-language pathology.
